Fire vs Burglary Safes
Two different protections. Here's how to decide which matters more for your situation.
They protect against different threats
A fire-rated safe keeps interior temperatures low during a fire. A burglary-rated safe resists physical attack from tools. These are independent protections — a safe with a great fire rating may have thin steel walls, and a vault-grade burglary safe may have no fire protection at all.
When to prioritize fire protection
Choose fire first if you're storing paper documents, photos, birth certificates, wills, insurance policies, or digital media. These items are irreplaceable and vulnerable to heat. A 60-minute fire rating is the standard recommendation for homes.
When to prioritize burglary protection
Choose burglary first if you're storing high-value items that would be targeted by a thief: jewelry, watches, cash, firearms, or sensitive business assets. TL-rated safes are the standard for high-value storage. Insurance may require a specific rating.
When you need both
Many safes offer dual protection. A composite safe with both fire insulation and thick steel walls gives you the best of both worlds. Expect to pay more, and the safe will be heavier. For most homes, a fire-rated safe with at least RSC burglary protection is a good balance.
