Lost Your Safe Combination?
It happens more often than you'd think, and in most cases you can get back in without drilling. Here's the path, in order.
First, gather three things
Serial number
Usually stamped on a plate or sticker on the door's hinge side, the door edge, or the back of the safe. On many gun safes it's also on the paperwork that shipped in the door pocket.
Proof of ownership
Your purchase receipt or order confirmation. Manufacturers will not release combinations without it — most require the request notarized so a combination can't be obtained by whoever happens to be standing in front of the safe.
Brand and model
From the logo on the door and the serial plate. The recovery process differs by manufacturer and lock type, so this determines who we contact.
Manufacturer combination recovery
For mechanical dial locks, manufacturers such as AMSEC, Gardall, and Hollon can typically retrieve or reset the factory combination for the registered safe — provided you supply the serial number and notarized proof of ownership. The exact process and turnaround vary by brand and by whether the combination was ever changed from the factory setting.
As an authorized dealer we deal with these departments routinely. Send us your brand, model, and serial number and we'll point you at the right channel and the exact paperwork your manufacturer requires — it usually saves a week of back-and-forth.
When to call a safe technician instead
- Electronic lock, dead or locked out: battery replacement fixes most "dead keypad" cases (the battery is usually in or behind the keypad). If the lock still won't respond, that's a lock issue, not a lost combination.
- Combination was changed and lost: the manufacturer can only release what's on file — a changed combination needs a qualified safe technician.
- You need in fast: a professional safe technician can open most safes non-destructively. Ask for someone who works on safes specifically (not just door locks) — membership in a professional safe-technician association is a good signal.
