TL-15 vs TL-30 Safes
Comparing tool-resistant ratings: test methods, protection levels, and when each makes sense.
What TL-15 means
TL-15 means the safe door resisted attack for 15 net working minutes using common hand tools, picking tools, mechanical or portable electric tools, grinding points, and carbide drills. The body is not rated — only the door. TL-15 safes typically weigh 750-2,000 lbs.
What TL-30 means
TL-30 extends the test to 30 net working minutes with the same tools plus additional cutting equipment. TL-30 safes have thicker walls, heavier doors, and more extensive relocker systems. They typically weigh 1,000-4,000+ lbs.
TL-30x6: all-sides protection
Standard TL ratings test only the door. The x6 suffix means all six sides (door, top, bottom, back, left, right) are rated. This prevents attack through the body from behind or below. TL-30x6 is the standard for jewelry stores and high-value commercial installations.
Which do you need?
TL-15 is sufficient for most high-value home storage and small business applications where the safe is in a monitored location. TL-30 is recommended when insurance requires it, for unmonitored locations, or for items valued above $100,000. TL-30x6 is for jewelry stores, high-risk businesses, and the highest-value storage.
