Safe Buying Guide

Start here if you're not sure what kind of safe you need.

What are you protecting?

The first question to answer is what goes inside. Firearms need vertical clearance and rack systems. Documents need fire protection. Cash needs deposit access. Jewelry needs interior drawers and lighting. Starting with what you protect narrows the field from hundreds of safes to a manageable shortlist.

Fire rating vs burglary rating

These are two separate protections. A fire-rated safe protects contents from heat for a tested duration (30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes). A burglary-rated safe resists physical attack (prying, drilling, cutting). Many safes offer both, but the balance depends on your priorities. Documents need fire first. Valuables need burglary first.

Size and placement

Measure your space before shopping. Consider door clearance, floor load capacity (safes can weigh 200-2,000+ lbs), and whether you'll bolt the safe down. Wall safes save floor space but offer less capacity. Floor safes are hidden but require installation into concrete.

Lock types

Electronic locks offer fast access with a keypad code. Mechanical dial locks never need batteries but are slower. Biometric locks use fingerprints for instant access. Redundant locks (electronic + key) provide backup. For gun safes where speed matters, electronic or biometric is preferred.

Budget considerations

Safes range from $200 for a basic fire box to $10,000+ for a TL-30 rated vault. The right budget depends on what you're protecting. A general rule: spend 10% of the value of what goes inside. Insurance requirements may also dictate a minimum rating level.
