Gun Safe Guide
Capacity, access speed, fire protection, and storage layout for firearm owners.
Capacity planning
Manufacturer gun counts are optimistic. A safe rated for '24 guns' may comfortably hold 12-16 with scopes and accessories. Plan for 50% more capacity than you think you need. Consider long guns, handguns, ammunition, and accessories separately.
Access speed
How fast do you need your firearm? Bedside handgun safes with biometric locks open in under 2 seconds. Traditional dial-lock gun safes take 15-30 seconds. For home defense, prioritize electronic or biometric locks on quick-access safes. For collection storage, dial locks are fine.
Fire protection for firearms
Ammunition is damaged at relatively low temperatures. A 30-60 minute fire rating is adequate for most gun safes. More important than duration is the interior temperature threshold and the quality of the fire seal (expanding gasket that blocks smoke and heat).
Interior layout and organization
Look for adjustable shelving, door-mounted pistol racks, barrel rests, and dehumidifier ports. Modular interiors let you reconfigure as your collection grows. Some safes offer electrical outlets for lighting and dehumidifiers inside.
Bolting and anchoring
Any gun safe should be bolted to the floor or wall. An unbolted safe can be tipped, rolled, or removed entirely. Most safes include bolt-down hardware. Concrete anchors for slab floors and lag bolts for wood subfloors are the two standard methods.
